Fitment of TPWS
In 2001 AEA Technology Rail were awarded the contract to manage the fitment of TPWS equipment to the delivered Class 175 DMUs for First NorthWestern, This included the design of the installation, the installation work and the necessary CCB and VAB approvals. Despite AEA having its own VAB, following successful negotiations CORREL Rail were appointed by AEA as the VAB for this project. This decision was influenced not only by our reputation but also by our experience certifying these units previously.
Whilst at the outset application of the in depth CORREL Rail design review process was considered by the project as being a little onerous, by the time the Design Certificate and the first Engineering Acceptance certificate was issued the benefits of the CORREL Rail process were clear to all involved. Not only had we a sound basis for the certification of these units but we had in fact identified two or three non RGS design flaws which would have cost AEA significant extra time and money to put right if they had gone undetected.
As a direct result of this successful project CORREL Rail were appointed the outsourced VAB of choice for AEA when they undertook a similar project for fitment of TPWS on the Class 180 DMU fleet on behalf of First Great Western and subsequently a further project for fitment of TPWS to the small number of Class 101s operated by First NorthWestern.
